Is Your HR Plan Ready? 7 Questions to Ask Before January
October 6, 2026, In Management & Organizational Performance
Fall is often a key planning period for HR teams. Budgets are being finalized, priorities are being defined, and initiatives for the upcoming year are starting to take shape.
It is also the perfect time to step back and evaluate your current approach.
Before launching new initiatives or simply continuing with the same practices year after year, ask yourself one important question: Is your strategy truly ready for the year ahead?
Here are seven questions to help you assess your priorities before January.
1. Are your managers ready to support and engage their teams?
Managers have a direct impact on the employee experience. They are the ones who provide feedback, recognize achievements, support employee development, and create the day-to-day work environment.
As the new year approaches, many organizations will also welcome new managers into leadership roles. Are they equipped with the tools they need to succeed? And are those already in the role growing their leadership skills?
Developing managers is not a one-time initiative. It is an ongoing investment.
2. Is recognition part of your everyday culture or only reserved for special occasions?
Recognition should not be limited to Employee Appreciation Day, an annual event, or milestone celebrations.
Organizations that build a strong culture of recognition create regular opportunities to acknowledge employees’ efforts, progress, and achievements, including the small wins that happen every day.
Ask yourself whether recognition is truly part of your daily practices or if it only happens occasionally.
3. Can employees easily recognize their colleagues?
Recognition should not rely solely on managers or HR.
Employees are also the ones who see the everyday contributions, acts of collaboration, and successes of their colleagues. Providing simple ways for employees to recognize one another helps strengthen connection, teamwork, and belonging.
When recognition can flow in every direction, it becomes more natural and sustainable.
4. Are you recognizing the moments that matter?
Years of service, anniversaries, retirements, onboarding milestones, professional achievements…
These moments are important milestones in an employee’s journey. When they go unnoticed, organizations miss valuable opportunities to strengthen their relationship with employees.
Celebrations do not have to be complex. They simply need to feel meaningful and consistent through the employee lifecycle journey.
5. Are your programs easy to manage?
Even the best initiatives lose their effectiveness when they become complicated to manage.
Do your HR systems and processes make it easier to manage your recognition program, or do they create additional administrative work? Do managers know what to do? Do employees understand how to participate? Are your processes simple, quick, and accessible?
The easier recognition is to manage for HR teams and offer to employees, the more likely it is to become a consistent practice.
6. Do you know what is actually working?
It is difficult to improve what you do not measure.
Which programs are being used most? Which managers regularly recognize their teams? Which initiatives generate the most participation? And which isn’t?
Taking the time to analyze your data helps you focus your efforts where they can have the greatest impact.
7. Do your initiatives support your HR goals?
Recognition is not an isolated initiative.
It can support your goals related to employee retention, engagement, leadership development, employee experience, and talent attraction.
Take a step back and ask yourself whether your current initiatives are truly contributing to the outcomes you want to achieve in the year ahead.
Take the time to assess your approach
You do not need to completely overhaul everything before January.
However, taking the time this fall to evaluate your practices can help you start the new year with clearer priorities and a stronger strategy.
Whether you want to develop your managers’ skills, make peer recognition easier, improve service award gifts or build a more structured recognition program, the important thing is to start before the new year is already underway.
